LOCATE

the Dune of Pilat

This imposing dune is located on the edge of the Landes de Gascogne forest massif. This vast pine forest is, as a reminder, the largest in Europe. The Dune of Pilat occupies a large part of the famous Silver Coast, at the entrance to the Arcachon Bay, and is between 110 and 115 m high. This dune obviously has impressive measurements: 2.9 km long and 616 m wide. It is subject to regular measurement because it is always on the move.

A moving dune

The constant movement of the Dune of Pilat is of particular interest to scientists, as it is the only one that is always in motion throughout the country. The eastern part of the Dune, that is to say the one that plunges into the Landes de Gascogne forest, buries the trees advancing 1 to 5 meters per year. This movement occurs under the influence of winds and tides. On its side facing the sea, the movements of the sand constantly modify the features of the coast. The inclination of the slopes is also variable depending on its position relative to the wind. The dune displays an asymmetrical shape.

NOTHING BETTER TO ADMIRE THE BEAUTY OF THIS MARINE LANDSCAPE WHILE BREATHING THE LARGE OUTDOOR AIR!
