ONE OF THE WONDERS OF NATURE THAT MAKES THE PARTICULARITY OF THE ARCACHON BASIN IS THE DUNE OF PILAT, RECOGNIZED AS THE HIGHEST DUNE IN EUROPE.
With its height which reaches more than 110 m, it does not go unnoticed and has a marvelous influence on the landscape. Climbing this immense wall of sand is a challenge to share with the family and an experience that is always unique during your holidays in Gironde. Once you reach the top, you have a completely magnificent view. At this height, you can distinctly observe the bird island, the oyster beds, the Cap Ferret lighthouse and much more.
the Dune of Pilat
This imposing dune is located on the edge of the Landes de Gascogne forest massif. This vast pine forest is, as a reminder, the largest in Europe. The Dune of Pilat occupies a large part of the famous Silver Coast, at the entrance to the Arcachon Bay, and is between 110 and 115 m high. This dune obviously has impressive measurements: 2.9 km long and 616 m wide. It is subject to regular measurement because it is always on the move.
A moving dune
The constant movement of the Dune of Pilat is of particular interest to scientists, as it is the only one that is always in motion throughout the country. The eastern part of the Dune, that is to say the one that plunges into the Landes de Gascogne forest, buries the trees advancing 1 to 5 meters per year. This movement occurs under the influence of winds and tides. On its side facing the sea, the movements of the sand constantly modify the features of the coast. The inclination of the slopes is also variable depending on its position relative to the wind. The dune displays an asymmetrical shape.
